About Our Process
We met for 12 weeks, twice a week for 1 1/2 hours with additional rehearsals toward the end. Muralists and actors began together. We did theatre games & excersises and brainstormed about the project, which was designed to address socially revelent issues. The muralists then met seperately to create design ideas that would expand the play. Then the theatre artists began ensemble style playwriting. We hope to continue the Mateel Youth Arts Project in the future.
The Mural by Wednesday Hendrix
The mural expresses the main themes of the over all play in symbolism. The pregnant teens in the center look out on either side to pillars, symbolizing their support. Graffiti decorates the background, expressing opinions and thoughts of young people in this community. Faces of society are looking onto all of this with their judgements or passiveness. Remember, we are a society but society is made up of individuals.
The Poster
Very Special Thanks to Pat Ryan for mentoring Daniel Whipple in the creation of the poster art for this performance. The Mateel Youth Art Project was made possible by a grant from the Humboldt Area Foundation and is a collaboration with Healthy Start.
